Myth #1: My vision is fine, I don’t need an eye exam!

April 11, 2016

We’re often asked how we came up with the name “Healthy Eyes”.  Well, for starters, we couldn’t very well use the difficult German last name … “Kreutzer Vision Center”…  Few would be able to pronounce it! 😉  But more importantly, we wanted to find a title that would describe what we actually do, in ensuring and protecting visual and overall health.  It’s not just a place to get your eyeglasses and contact lenses, although we do love that part as well!  Our top priority is to be part of your overall preventative health, protecting your vision for a lifetime.

Many people don’t visit an eye doctor regularly because they feel their eyesight is great.  And this may be true (go YOU!), but an annual eye exam is still important to detect changes in your overall health.

Of course, we check your vision.  Maybe you’re experiencing mild changes in night driving, or noticing eyestrain after working on the computer all day.  We can take simple measurements on how your focusing system is working and discuss various lenses and coatings that may help.  Many people are amazed at how much better things look, saying “It’s in High Definition now!”

But in addition to checking for visual changes, a comprehensive eye exam can detect conditions such as dry eye, glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even really scary things like blood disorders and tumors.  When we look at the eye, we are analyzing and recording everyone’s unique features; the health of their cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.  Evaluating these characteristics annually allows us to pick up on early changes if they occur.  Therefore, making it important that eye care become part of your preventative health care.  (Check out our new Optos machine here http://www.healthyeyesky.com/uncategorized/we-have-an-awesome-new-machine !)

The importance of regular eye exams starts at childhood, when vision and health defects can impact development.  We can get a great amount of information even out of a 3 year old, accurately measuring their vision with cool pictures (making sure it is normal and equal in both eyes), checking their depth perception and color vision, and looking at the health of their retina too!

So, in addition to your regular visits with your physician and dentist, also make annual eye exams a top priority.  Call today for more information or to schedule an appointment for you and the entire family!
