Ooooh…Ahhhh!

June 25, 2013

Fourth of July is a time of celebration for all Americans and is usually honored by back-yard barbeques and patriotic fireworks.  Unfortunately, without proper firework safety precautions, the fun can sadly end in tragedy.  Each year, thousands are injured using fireworks, almost 20% involving trauma to the eyes.  Common eye injuries include cuts and burns, retinal or optic nerve damage, and even rupture of the eyeball, all of which can lead to permanent vision loss.

A safe and enjoyable way to celebrate Independence Day is to visit a public fireworks display in town.  If, however, you plan to be a part of a non-professional fireworks event at home, please follow these important safety tips:

  • Do not allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.  Even sparklers burn at temperatures of approximately 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt gold!  Instead, maybe invest in colorful glow sticks or ropes for the kids?
  • Buy only legal fireworks and never try to make your own.
  • Keep a bucket of water or hose close-by in case of accidents.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device and wear eye protection when lighting the fuse.  Light fireworks one at a time and then quickly back away to a safe distance.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Do not touch or try to re-light fireworks that have not ignited fully, and soak the used devices in water before throwing them in the trash.
  • If an accident occurs involving your eyes, seek medical attention immediately, even if you think the injury to be mild.  Do not rub or rinse the area, and avoid aspirin or ibuprofen, as they will thin the blood.  If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact an eye care professional 24-hours a day by following our voicemail prompts at 502-543-1624.

Have a Fun and Safe July 4th Holiday!
